Happy Captives

2:14  "But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ."

The Greek word here translated "leads us in triumph" says more than is reflected in the translation. The idea is not of a victorious army being led by its captain after a mighty battle. Rather, the image is of captives being led by a captain who has captured them, displaying His mighty power by exhibiting his conquered foes.

We were once His enemies, but have now been subdued and conquered by Him. We were once a part of Satan’s empire; now we are happy captives of Jesus Christ:

"He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son." (Col.1:13)

Now God has put us on display as His trophies of war so that all the world can behold His overcoming power. God reveals His overpowering grace by the health and the happiness and the hope of His captives. Our Christ-filled lives are His trophies on display before the world, exhibiting His excellent deeds and accomplishments.

Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! For surely, O Lord, when You ascended on high You led captive a host of captives. And how happy I am to be counted among them. What a blessing it is to be Your prisoner; what an honor to be Your slave! Fill me with Your Spirit that my life may be a living trophy of the power of Your grace.
