Knowledge that Emboldens (4:14)

4:13-14 "But having the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, ’I believed, therefore I spoke,’ we also believe, therefore we also speak, 14 KNOWING THAT HE WHO RAISED THE LORD JESUS WILL RAISE US ALSO WITH JESUS AND WILL PRESENT US WITH YOU."

Paul knew something. And knowing this ’something’ propelled him into all the world speaking boldly.

In verse 14 Paul continues his explanation for why he busied himself with the proclamation of the gospel to the Corinthians (and to other places as well). It is because he knows "that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and will present us" together on the last day.

Paul knew what was going to happen at the end of the story. And he was so taken by the anticipation of that moment, he was so enthralled with the knowledge of the coming of the great Bridegroom Jesus and the resurrection of His bride and the great wedding which would follow, that he was compelled to proclaim the good news to those living in darkness in order to make God’s elect ready.

What continually astonishes me is how the glory of the great resurrection on the last day was the engine that drove Paul to courageously proclaim Christ, and yet for modern Christians the last day plays almost no part in our thinking or motivation at all. It is no wonder that we are one-and-a-half horsepower Christians compared to Paul’s amazing superhuman energy. Until the last day is emblazoned on our minds, until the spectacular glory of that day captures our imagination, our motivation for earthly things will continue to exceed our motivation for the things above.

"If we have hoped in Christ for this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied." (1Cor.15:19)

I am ashamed, dear Father, of how little I contemplate the promised day of Christ’s return. I am still so attached to this earth! I see here that the secret of Paul’s courage and abandon was his confident anticipation of the day when the Son of God will restore all things. Having that on his mind changed everything. May it change me too, Lord. May Your promises inflame my heart with faith and boldness and love: daily, hourly, constantly.
